An individual who lays down those concerns is not granted immediate Tatum-esque talent. I was speaking on the grand scale, of what the society is capable of, if we put aside the nonsense and spend our resources working together on our planet and our children. That is what we are all capable of, as a whole. And yes, I meant the petty and imaginary ones - that is why I chose those words.

  • You see that type of hyperbolic title all over youtube - the "greatest" this, the "greatest" that.

On this video however I think the title is singularly accurate. This might actually be the greatest piano solo in history.

  • Always LOVED this one!

  • @dilaudud Well, this song is actually 3 songs, Stars and Stripes Forever, and two other songs, i forgot what they were it's in a bio, Art sometimes integrated parts of different songs into his improvisations because of his amazing memory. See Art was kind of mocking the original writer of this song, because he thought that this type of music was taken to seriously, so this is sort of like a parody lol.

  • @TheMikester307 he may have if he didn't drink so much alcohol, the man loved his beers :)

  • BLOODY ELL

  • @helmut4lyfe Tatum died in '56 .. He'd been playing all this stuff and more in after-hours clubs since the 20s, and most of his later years were spent actually in the recording studio ... There wouldn't have been a lot of chances to video tape him live.

  • old timey piano played technical death metal.

btw, anyone know what art tatum piece was in the movie "ray"? it sounds similar to this but has more diminished scales.

  • I litened this for the first time. I was very surprised ! !

  • @helmut4lyfe I'll give you I have much to discover. I hated opera once, jazz (when i love rock) and country... It's always better to love more... but I really think Marylou Willams and Bud Powell are greater artists than Peterson. I think Cole is vastly underrated as a pianist. And there's JP Johnson, Fats Waller and a lot more too. But you're right. The more the better.
