  • ...and exclude the people whose legacy was only poverty. She said that it is a tradition of unfairness that has led to this, and Juan's formula will not solve it alone when the society itself is still structured unfairly to increase the wealth gap. She believes the only way to fix it is for both sides to work together, not for the poor to continue butting their heads against a wall unfairly designed to make them struggle harder for less, while the other side is showered with gifts of wealth.

  • Justice and fairness for the nation's people is Lani's cause that builds upon Juan's more basic, personal philosophy. As she's mentioned a couple of times in this video series, her argument is not adversarial to Juan's as you suggested, but goes beyond it. Yes, of course we want to make better personal choices for our induvidual success, but we are left faced with a society that was built from a legacy of slavery and jim crow in which those who have access to assets continue to marginalize...

  • Williams focuses on what one can do to improve their life and the lives of their children. Guinier focuses on others having more wealth. It's obvious who is more effective at helping their community and who is more effective at spreading jealousy thus encouraging resentment and racism. It's well understood: if you resent those that are more successful, it prevents you from becoming successful, because subconsciously you will resent your own success. It's a damaging negative association.
