James Kalm makes a pilgrimage to "A Gathering of the Tribes Gallery" 235 East Third Street on the south side of Manhattan's East Village. "Being in A Lone Space" features paintings by Giustina Surbone and Robin Ross, these artists present paintings dealing with figurative subject matter, rich coloration, and hard won facture. This video features an extended interview with the Founding Director Steven Cannon.

  • ashtrays, ashtrays and cigarettes and ashtrays......what was larry rivers like?

  • He was one very hip dude, and a generous cat with friends and younger artists.

  • Great production and coverage of the East Village, James, Steve Cannon is one jazzy fellow, are there any places left from the eighties in alphabet city?

  • Unfortunately, between the art bust, AIDS, and real estate developers, the whole scene vanished. There are still some of the galleriests left, but they've all moved on to other neighborhoods

  • Great video, cheers James.

  • Awesome interview James. Next time I'm in NYC I know of a great place to go.

  • This is fabulous!!!! Go Tribe!!! The spring show he talked about is a blast. I have to admit I haven't been in many moons, what with Williamsburg and all, but I'm so glad to see this piece.

  • :))))))))) How GREAT it is to quickly nip out to NY for lunch break!!!!! A big THANKS from Germany, James!!!!!

  • Wow! What a treat! A close up interview of the coolest of the cool blind professor Steve Cannon plus the grand tour of Ross's show as Cannon's Tribes Gallery. You are now St. James Kalm. Thanks for spreading the word and the images.

  • the unauthorized autobiography, What I Did, is a really fun read; he tells the most embarrassing sexual moments of his life.....outstanding:)

  • I have been a big fan of Robin Ross's paintings for years. While the video give a good impression of the work, video does not do them justice. You really need to see these paintings and experience them up close and personal.
