THIS is the ORIGINAL version of Spooky by saxophonist Mike Sharpe (AKA Mike Shapiro). Sorry about the quality. It is one of my favorite instrumentals and being over 40 years old, has been played to death.
I believe it came out in 1965-66.

  • This is, without question, THEE original. I recall playing this tune in my first teen funk band (The Dell-Monicos), and slow draggin' to it in my boyz basement - you know... red light / high humidity 'n' all - around, ohhh, 1967 or thereabouts. PULLEEEZE don't apologize for the scratches. I'm just glad somebody found it and posted it. By the way, David Sanborn made an excellent remake of this jam on his album "Songs from the Night Before". Check it out. He recaptures the original's flavor.

  • @bwilliamsjr08 Thanks for the comment. I went to your page and listened to Sanborn's version. It does capture the feel of the "Original"!

  • how is this the orginal , surely the orginal would have vocals?

  • @w4rp3d256 First of all, there are a lot of instrumentals that had the words put to tham later. A couple that come to mind are Love is Blue by Paul Mauriat and Lighter Shade of Pale by Procol Harem which was based on a classical piece. Second, this version of Spooky pre-dates the versions with lyrics. Check the later versions and see who wrote the song.

  • 1st time I heard this was in 2000 the week of halloween on an oldies radio station, until that time I thought the Classics IV was the original one.

  • Thank you for sharing this. It is quite good. Having been a teenager back then I never heard (or remember) this version. No offense intended but I still prefer the Classic IV's. But, again thank you this.

  • Yes! This was early 1967 and what a GROOVE it still is. B-side "Breakthrough" is not too shabby either. Hi NRG!

  • @w4rp3d256 No. It was originally written for the saxophone. If I remember right, the author was a member of Classics IV.

  • @w4rp3d256 No. It was originally written for the saxophone. However, this arrangement didn't do as well. I believe Mike was a member of Classics IV.

  • This was one of a few jazz/funk instrumentals that was popular on r&b formatsin the late 60's(1967 to be exact). Also, check out the song "Birdland" made popular by the Manhattan Transfer-it was acutally composed & performed by the jazz group WEATHER REPORT.

  • Still has that spooky vibe. Thanks for sharing. :)

  • @rrodekurt nice sax solo
