Part 3 of a digital painting tutorial using Corel Painter and a Wacom pen tablet. Part 1 began with the concept or idea and progressing to a grayscale painting. Part 2 adds more details and refines the dragon into a polished final form, in Part 3 the dragon gets a dose of color via the digital watercolor brushes.

*Note: I use one layer to paint my portraits just like in traditional art. This is especially necessary when working with certain brushes such as the digital watercolors or tinting brushes, which create undesired effects if painted on a new transparent layer. Painting on one layer also helps in honing my painting skills and forces me to commit & make corrections in my paintings which in turn creates a learning experience every time.

  • Thanks to all for giving me great comments and feedback! I have more videos I am working on and will be posting again soon!

  • What kind of Tablet are you using? Cause I'm planning on getting a Bamboo Connect, seeing how it's the cheapest I can find.

  • @DawnSparda696 I use the Wacom Intuos 3, it's old now, but still going strong. The new Bamboos are good as they also have the same levels of pressure sensitivity as the old Intuos line. I'm also getting a new Bamboo to replace my Intuos 3. :)

  • this is probably a dumb question. but can u start doing the colors from the start instead of building it up first in grey tones? i ask cause i see other artists working in different ways.

what is the advantage for the final painting to do the grey tones first?

  • @CT2507 I do the grey tones to get the composition, lighting, and values in place so I know where to make the colors richer or lighter. This is an old world way of painting, and the great masters of the past painted this way. For me, it's like creating a drawing first, then coloring it. But there is no right or wrong way, only the way that works for the artist, and all artists have a unique way of painting.

  • Hey how many layer did you do this in?

  • @bremstone This is done all in one layer. I use the traditional approach to paint on one canvas layer, but sometimes I will use 2 or 3 layers if I have a complex background.
