The broken egg is a motif that holds a direct relevance to the answer machine, having lost a relationship or somebody, The broken egg is symbolism to that. There are other Theory's and elements in the film, like removing the pan, but I think only Kiarostami can answer that.

Fantastic, every element in this short film, shot with original equipment used by the Lumiere Brothers recreating conditions of 1895 film making, every aspect in this film has a reason.
