Directed by Samira Abbasi ( Bangladesh ) Telling the story of Sheema and her family , a 12 year old girl.

I am Samira Abbasi, a Bangladeshi national. In August of 2010, I visited a village in my country borrowing a camera from my friend to explore the implications of MDG in that small village and to make this documentary film. As I was making the film around this small family (Sheema's) I was delighted to find many of the goals were already implemented or in process in the village. I tried to capture an essence of these
incredible positive progresses towards MDG in the short duration of two minutes of my film.

I made this film from my social responsibility. The dreams Sheema has are achievable and can produce a million smiles. We all need to work together at it. Dreams and goals are contagious, I believe! In this context if this film is shown in different developing countries in their own language (including in Bengali language in different parts of my country), I believe it will improve awareness and may serve as a good inspiration for other villages to follow what the people in this small village did.

What is this village family doing to achieve the MDG s ?

1. The young girl Sheema and her brother both attend primary school crossing a river as their village is remote. Education is imp to them. This links directly to Goal 2 (Achieve universal primary education)

2. Their uncle Rahim, once a beggar now works for the school as a clerk, thus reducing his poverty and hunger. This links to Goal 1 (Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, TARGET 1, 2 and 3).

3. They clean themselves after school, they have safe drinking water from a deep well as opposed to pond water in the past and they use sanitary latrine. Goal 7 (Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation)

4. Their aunt who is pregnant, is receiving good prenatal care. This is in contrast to a sad event of the past where another aunt had died at childbirth. Goal 5 (Improve Maternal Health, TARGET A and B).

5. Sheema's Uncle works as garments worker and these products are exported. Goal 8 (TARGET 2 Developing countries gain greater access to the markets of developed countries)

6. Mom raises poultry and dairy for extra income. Goal 1.

7. The little girl teaches her mom who never had the opportunity to attend school. This relates to Goal 3 (Promote gender equality and empower women). The mom also supports the daughter's education strongly, and will resist her early marriage.

8. They use mobile phone, they have access to computers and internet. This opens a new vista of knowledge for them. Goal 8 (In cooperation with the private sector, make available benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications).

9. They learn about many things including HIV/AIDS, thus increasing awareness and access to treatment . Goal 6 (Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases)

10. They use energy saving bulbs. Goal 7. (Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes; reverse loss of environmental resources)

11. Their aunt had a safe delivery and a baby girl. Goal 4 ( Reduce by two thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate)

12. The aunt will receive proper post natal care. Goal 6 ( Achieve by 2015 universal access to reproductive health)

I really enjoyed making this film and feel excited to be part of a process where human dignity and rights may be established. Lets all work together for the Millenium Development goals and spread a million smiles.

Thanks !
