Inspired by the 2006 Academy Award® nominee for Best Foreign Language film, "Water," this documentary tells the story of some of the 20 million Indian widows who are abandoned by their families and literally turned out into the streets when their husbands died. "Water" was a fictional recounting of this terrible tradition, set in 1938. "The Forgotten Woman" is true, and happening today.

  • it is not a tradition...it has nothing to do with religion...it is a crime and it is shameful to have a society.... accepting this criminal mind.....

  • For all of the buffoons out there commenting on how this movie is fake or somehow exaggerated the film was made in 2008 so why don't you spare us the crap and just tell the women who live in these horrible conditions that their lives are too bad to be true.

  • deepa Mehta has done a fine job of getting the message out to the world.

  • Deep.

  • who made this documentry...this is bullshit...these are old women these things used to happen 50 years ago...not now...this is total crap...plz provid with stats..

  • @ caligirl Sofia...

Why wld tht lady b sad ? She jst spoke sense

The entire human litter of Somalis exist or survive th nxt day on basis of Alms ...

I do not claim India to b this pic-perf place for a lady wth her man -but hey ! wht so unique bt India ?is ths situation only in India ?

I wish people like Deepa Mehta win oscars and their grand prixes feeding off their pseudo-empathizing accounts of situations which portray India in such poor light.

cz making a real film is bynd thr capacity

  • its about how women r treated when they r widowed..over nite they lose everything coz of traditional

  • 1:12 that lady is sad..wat if u were a widow?

  • so is ur mother living in a place like that..or with u?

  • Very honorable words, and also the Christians believe "honor thy father and thy mother", which is the kind and decent thing to do.
