On the morning of August 7, 2011, multiple trains are seen rolling along CSX's busy Northern Subdivision. The video begins at N.J. Cabin in Limeville, KY. This important junction is where CSX's line to Cincinnati meets the Northern Subdivision running between Russel, KY and Columbus, OH. The tower at NJ has been closed for years and is likely be demolished soon when crews replace the nearby C&O signals.

The first train is Amtrak's eastbound Cardinal (#50) as it sprints past the last four track signal bridge built by the C&O. A few minutes later a stack train also heads east towards Russel at NJ Cabin. A third eastbound is viewed from above in Greenup, KY. New signals are clearly visible though not yet active. The final train (westbound) is seen twice, first at Greenup and again a few miles west at Edgington, KY. Again, new signals are ready to be activated.

  • Not cool man! I NEVER got to catch a Dash 8 :( Plus, the signals are switched over all the way to South Shore AFAIK, which sucks.

  • Lots of EB coal moves off the Northern for Santee Cooper (from IL) and Duke Power (MGA fields)

  • Very cool Brian! Weird seeing an eastbound loaded coal train there, but it obviously either came off the CD or is PRB coal.
