From the classic 1953 Walt Disney/RKO production, "The Sword and The Rose". This clip is of "Princess Mary Tudor's Ball". Starring a very young Glynis Johns (Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins), Richard Todd as Charles Brandon (love of the Princess) and James Robertson Justice as King Henry VIII.
The Sword and The Rose tells the true story of the youngest sister of King Henry VIII and her love for Charles Brandon.

  • Ah, it brings back memories! I used to dance la Volta when I was at university, in the Renaissance Dance club. Couldn't do it now, alas! It included a bit more galliard, a bit less hugging, though. :-) Isn't Glynis Johns gorgeous?

  • @greatraven1 I love period dancing. I got to do some when I was civil war reenacting. Hoop skirt and all :)

  • I doubt she was really like that to Queen Katherine though, Mary was for Henry and Katherine and despised Anne Boleyn. Also, Katherine was not that staunch; come on!

  • She seems to say, "Maestro, strike up the band!" I think "La Volta" is related to the "Spanish Panic" in "Once Upon A Mattress".

  • love the Volta

  • Lov ethe volta !
