This song holds a special meaning to me~was lucky enough to share that reason with Michael at the afters in Dublin(the rehearsals), & I've told Mike since that I loved his version- he is sweet & shy, my friends were in John Keane's with Mike recording for 4 days, then they'd go to a Mexican restaurant each night by way of thanking Mike.Agua Linda- thee best Mexican in Athens.

    Love those guys!!

Michael Stipe doesn't hate this song. He wrote it. Peter Buck says that he used to hate this song, but he now says he was wrong about the song and he doesn't hate it anymore. He doesn't necessarily love it, but he doesn't hate it.

Why does Peter Buck hate this song? I sure hope Michael Stipe doesn't. It's a great tune, perhaps one of the most representative songs of Fables of the Reconstruction in my opinion.

I thought it was Peter who hated this song?

I don't know that that's a faux drawl; he is from GA, after all. It sounds too comfortable on him to be faux. Exaggerated, perhaps. A co-worker of mine is from New Orleans, and she has zero accent... until she wants it, and then her childhood accent springs up in all its glory. From my experience, more than a few Southerners, mostly those who attended college, purposefully work on losing their accent so they don't sound "uneducated." Kind of sad to me, but I guess that's the way of things.

It's sort of hilarious watching Bill Berry who was so (literally) instrumental in some of R.E.M's best moments being confined to that percussive scraper device here. Is there any more of this performance anywhere online, besides So. central rain?
