This video demonstrates the technique for casting-on stitches in knitting using a provisional cast on technique. This is a good technique to use when starting the toe of a sock or anywhere that you need to have live stitches at one end of your knitting. Live stitches are stitches that are not bound off and are ready to work.

  • You don't have to add stitches but I don't know why you would do a provisional cast on unless you needed live stitches. Otherwise, you are just going to have to bind them off. I suppose you could use a sewn bind off method though and end up with a different looking cast-on edge. You could also add some kind of fancy edging.

  • When using a provisional cast on, do you actually have to add stitches to the other end once you remove the cast on edge, or can you just leave it as is and have a nice clean edge?
