Ronald Brown Nosferatu

"One of the most compelling movies I have ever seen is the original silent version of Murnau's 'Nosferatu.' Since then I have seen versions with sound tracks added, but they always seem to me to be distracting from the story, instead of enhancing it. As much as Id love to score the entire movie, that is too large a project for this display. So, I have tried to focus on one theme of the story: the longing of very old, feared, and hated man for human contact, particularly one woman, Nina, that he knows only through a photograph. Nina responds to his lust with nightmares, but also fascination. As he draws closer to his goal, Ninas conflict between fear of and attraction to this strange creature becomes more pronounced. Nosferatu finally achieves his goal as Nina succumbs to his advances, knowingly sacrificing her purity in order to destroy the creature who has caused such troubling emotions to rise within her. By using only a violin and timpani I hoped to enhance the feeling of isolation and longing between the two main characters."

The composer effectively captures both the sorrow and the horror in Murnau's chilling vision of the "undead" without overwhelming the visual content. Well done!
