There are so many graphic animal cruelty videos that get posted. There are so many pleas to adopt this animal or save that animal from a shelter before he/she is gassed. Reading all these postings and watching these videos while informative give me an overwhelming sense of sadness and helplessness. Why isnt someone posting videos and stories about some doing something to save an abused and neglected animal? I wish I could do something to save all of those poor creatures but I cant. What I will do is try to help Fred.
Fred is name I gave this poor old hound that wandered up into of yard a few days ago. Virginia saw him first. She was dumping out some old chicken feed that had gotten wet. She later saw poor old Fred trying to eat that mess. He was in bad shape; not only was he severely malnourished he had ticks all over his face and around his eyes. Virginia treated him with Frontline and that took care of the ticks. We took him to vet and found out he also had heartworms and hookworms. The vet told us from the looks of it Fred had been neglected as puppy because his body is underdeveloped for his age. We got some antibiotics from the vet and something else to kill the hookworms. The plan is to treat Freds primary infection for two weeks and try to get his immune system built back up. Hopefully this will weaken the heartworms. If Freds immune system improves then we will be able to be more aggressive in treating his heartworms, but more important than that; Virginia and I are making sure Fred gets lots of love and attention. So far Fred is hanging around and shows no inclination of leaving, which is fine with Virginia and me. Since we live in country away from the highway we arent going to tie him up. Fred can come and go as he pleases. For now he seems to accept us and is willing to stay. He takes his medicine with no trouble. Virginia and I are praying that Fred will make it. If he does then he will have a home for as long as he wants.

  • Aren't you and Virginia a puppy's hero...thank you for your compassion

  • @sekhmetraptah Fred has since disappeared. I'm not sure where he went. A couple of months later Virginia brought home two female pups that she found abandoned on the highway. We named them Phoebe and Bonnie and they are still with us.

  • I'm glad that you and Virginia could do for Fred while you had the chance; and commend you both for doing what you can and continue to do.

Phoebe and Bonnie are very fortunate (and hopefully indoor) pups.

  • Poor boy, glad to hear you're going to help him out, look how happy he is to have you!
