HIRUDO SALTANS - Dancing leeches

Young artist Ruth C. Deissinger dedicated this movie to her friends, the leeches (zool. Hirudines medicinales), living in a aquarium and drinking her blood.
Music for her friends: "Stand By Me". This lovesong was a coproduction (1961) of Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

Ruth C. Deissinger: My film is an hommage to the leech, a creature that has been in the service of humanity for more than two thousand years. The very graceful movements of these little animals awaken in us a feeling of both fascination and horror. My bloodsuckers carry out their dance to the song "Stand By Me". The idea that these little creatures live from our blood is but one element of my work; the naturalness of it all is for me more significant.

Mit meinem Film habe ich dem Blutegel, der dem Menschen seit mehr als 2000 Jahren nützliche Dienste erweist, ein Denkmal gesetzt. Diese sich sehr ästhetisch bewegenden Tiere wecken in uns, bei genauerer Betrachtung, Faszination und Schrecken gleichermaßen. Die tanzenden Bewegungen vollführen meine Egel zum Lied "Stand by Me". Die Tatsache, dass diese Tiere von unserem Blut leben, ist Bestandteil meiner Arbeit, wobei die Natürlichkeit des Ganzen von zentraler Bedeutung ist.
