@Felldeeen91 The U.S. military has the tradition of naming all of America's enemies by names that are stereotypically common to that country or names that are based on other stereotypes. It's actually pretty funny and creative. Examples include Fritz or Kraut for Germans, Ivan for Russians, Haji or Ali Baba for Muslim insurgents, and Charlie for the North Vietnamese.

best scene ever!!

@MaxaMatt Naw, Call of Duty should never be mentioned in the same sentence as Apocolypse Now.
-
@Generation1Terrorist Well, the thing is that in written form, "target" will still be shortened down to "T", but in verbal use, it is still referred to as "TANGO" ease communication.
-
@Florian267 i don't understand how that makes it shorter though, it's still the same number of syllables ..

Ohhhhh not Charlie Manson.

Call of Duty is Apocalypse Now's bitch.

@Felldeeen91 I thought VC (Viet Cong) was Victor Charlie in the military communications (they've got a whole alphabetical system of words to avoid people mishearing messages) and then naturally it was shortened to Charlie. Hope that's semi-accurate and helpful. Check my channel if you like good raw blues, btw...

can someone please tell me why the vietnamese was called "charlie" ?
If anyone knows the origins of "Tango" as a term for enemy, can you reply to this? i'm kinda interested.

@NinteenNinty3
"TANGO is derived from the phonetic alphabet, with Tango being the phonetic equivalent of T. TARGET was shortened to T and then subsequently Tango. Therefore when someone says "Tango down" they are stating target down"
