While most of us were introduced to Petra by the movie, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", Petra was originally developed over 2600 years ago by an Arab Tribe. About the same time when Buddhism was founded in India, and the Cyrus of Persia overran the Greek Colonies.

Petra not only possessed the advantages of a fortress but controlled the main commercial routes which passed through it to Gaza in the west, to Bosra and Damascus in the north, to Aqaba and Leuce Come on the Red Sea, and across the desert to the Persian Gulf. The Romans conquered Petra around 2100 years ago.
