  • When you predetermine that an individual is to be a "winner" of any given situation, regardless of the outcome, that person is destine to be just as much a "loser' as he is or is not a "winner". An intrinsic drive to excellence is shattered when there is no chance of recognized achievement.

  • @SheckyZ28 There is recognition, just not based on how many goals they make or how only based on their merit of play. they are recognized for their Christ-like behavior and how well they get along with their team mates. My children participated and never felt like failures or were given a false hope of always being a winner.

  • SheckyZ28, let me get this right. Your idea of teaching children success in life is based on a sports score. The purpose of Upward is not to make children winners on the basketball court, but winners in life by teaching them godly values and character. You hold sports competition much too highly if you think somehow it makes children stronger. Losing a basketball game doesn't prepare you for the tragedies of life and neither does winning a game make you a success.

  • Selling the package of "everyone is a winner" is an easy one to parents who want their children to always be happy. However, it is a disgrace to any Upward affiliate who markets this product, considering the fact there is a stockpile of research that points out such practices are not helpful but harmful to children.

  • The Upward philosophy of "everyone is a winner" is both unproven and a sham. It hinders the potential of young persons by making them naive to the challenges of a real world setting. Everyday, there are winners and there are losers. Coming in last place does not have to be a terrible thing; it should be used as a lesson to better ones self
