SAN DIEGO -- Four people were injured and portions of the busiest border crossing in the U.S. were shut down for hours Tuesday after federal agents fired shots across nine lanes of traffic to stop three vans suspected of smuggling illegal immigrants from Mexico, authorities said.

The 74 people crammed into the vans were taken into federal custody.

Details remained sketchy, but San Diego police spokesman Lt. Kevin Rooney said the van drivers tried to storm past inspectors at the San Ysidro port of entry _ which connects San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico _ and make their way into the U.S. without stopping.

Two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and a Customs and Border Patrol agent fired their guns to try to stop them, he said. There was no return fire.

"It was human smuggling, definitely," ICE spokeswoman Lauren Mack said.

However, more Border Patrol agents will not solve the problem, Cracking down on the huge number of fake IDs being used by illegals is the solution.We have the technology to do it, we just need to employ the FBI and other agencies to do it...

Wither you talk about one or the other, most of the 535 on the hill are big Government Socialist. I vote for liberty, and you can't have that with Government telling you what you can or can't do. Is absolute liberty perfect. No, But it is my opinion the best system one to date. When we stop talking about D's and R's an start talking about real issues like the FED, we'll all be far better off.

Border security is the responsibility of the executive branch, clearly. It saddens me to think that we should weaken our borders after going around the world doing our best to piss people off for the last 60 years. This is not smart policy.
