A rare recording of the OBC of Pacific Overtures (1976). The Musical (music/lyrics: Stephen Sondheim book: John Weidman) was nominated for 10 Tony awards (won two) and 7 Drama Desk awards (won two). Featuring Mako, James Dybas,  Timm Fujii,  Alvin Ing,  Patrick Kinser-Lau,  Isao Sato,  Sab Shimono,  Mark Syers,  Ricardo Tobia,  Gedde Watanabe,  Fusaka Yoshida.

Part 1 of 20.

On a couple of parts there is an occasional VHS distortion/drop outs, please excuse this!

  • Where did this come from?

  • This was Broadcast on Japanese television many years ago. I'm hoping it will be professionally released on DVD in the future (it apparently was going to happen for Sondheim's birthday a few years ago but never happened)

  • this show is INCREDIBLY underrated :(

  • thanks so much - yes the quality is a problem sometimes but it's wonderful so much has survived. I thought it was the great lost musical.

  • Nothing replaces intelligence and creation, too bad that broadway has lost this type of creative ambition. An amazing show, I saw at the DCP in LA. And Mako actually moved into our home after we left our duplex in the Mircle Mile.

  • How fascinating. This show was my first steady contract on Broadway. I took over for someone who left to go elsewhere. I was thrilled to be a part of the show, even for only the last 10 weeks. This recording was made while I was in the band. We got paid next-to-nothing because we were told it would be for viewing ONLY in JAPAN and would never be seen in the US of dear old A. Ah, well, "the check is in the mail" too. It's a great memory. I love Sondheim forever! Hail to the chief!

  • Thank you sooooo much!!! I've been trying to find it but haven't been able to!! Thank you thank you thank you sooooo much!!!

  • Boris Aronson's sets were ravishing and appeared washed-out but at least there are fragments - brush strokes of his genius.

  • Just about the best gift I could ask for. Now, could you please transport me back in time to visit the original Penn Station?

  • "Life and Death are but verses in a poem."

  • Oh wow, I didn't know Mako was in this. Best musical evar.

  • THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!!!!!!!

  • The music sounds like a Japanese version of Into The Woods.

  • Wow... I'm so glad Equity hasn't forced this off YouTube. Previously, the only place to see this video was the Billy Rose Collection of NYPL at Lincoln Center. I echo the hopes of a previous post here that this will be released onto DVD as it was originally taped and edited for broadcast (unlike most of the Billy Rose Collection, which are exclusively archival recordings).
