readings from the novella, plus interviews with folks from Cuba who knew Papa back in the day, including Ernesto Garcia Gutierrez.

from the documentary " Ernest Hemingway: Rivers to the Sea"

originally aired on TV as part of PBS series "American Masters"

readings by Kate Burton and James Naughton

Directed by DeWitt Sage

Tom Stoppard wrote:

One gets badly bitten by writers perhaps only two or three times, between the ages of eight and 18. The first passion I remember was for a boys' stories writer, Arthur Ransome, when I was eight. I remember writing Runyon short stories in my teens, and a couple of Truman Capote short stories after I had left school, but I don't think I got thoroughly bitten again until I was about 20, late for Hemingway. The general influence of Hemingway's style is, of course, much more pervasive than that of, say, Runyon or Capote. It seems much simpler to copy. Writers have been trying to copy it for over half a century now.

  • a great book....somedays I feel like Santiago, and somedays I feel like the fish....

  • "I had gone to no such place but to the smoke of cafes and nights when the room whirled and you needed to look at the wall to make it stop, nights in bed, drunk, when you knew that that was all there was, and the strange excitement of waking and not knowing who it was with you, and the world so unreal in the dark and so exciting that you must resume again unknowing and not caring in the night, sure that this was all and all and all and not caring." -E.H., 1929 A Farewell To Arms

  • Hemingway is the most overrated writer in the history of literature. The only decent book he wrote was A Moveable Feast. F. Scott Fitzgerald introduced Hemingway to Max Perkins at Scribners getting Hemingway started and then Hem shit on Fitzgerald the rest of his life. No book Hemingway ever wrote can compare to The Great Gatsby. The Old Man in the Sea is something a third grader can read. Great literature is not read by third graders.

  • @Supertramp1966 I'm glad you liked it. And it is strong compared to the bulk of books out there. You just don't get the same kind of feeling you get from The Sun also Rises, or For Whom the Bell Tolls, or, indeed, The Old Man and the Sea. It was okay, but I wouldn't suggest it.

  • @tidalwavedave305

I completely disagree. I felt it to be a strong novel, albeit not as good as his best...Don't look for flaws, and you will always be pleased.

  • I am a Falun Gong practitioner. Falun Dafa is a cultivation system in the Buddha School based on the principles of the Universe: 真 Truthfulness 善 Compassion 忍 Forbearance.

Since 1999 it has been brutally persecuted by the CCP in China. People are being killed, tortured, put into concentration camps and have organs harvested from live people, simply because of their belief. More than 3400 Falun Gong practitioners have died at the hands of CCP in the past 12 years.

  • Yeah, I just read Across the River and Into the Trees and it was disappointing. There were some funny bits, and a few startling truisms, but it is of far lower quality than his other works. If that had been the first Hemingway book I'd read, I don't think I'd have read another.

  • thumb if you came here cause of school Q_Q
