Boxer Henry Cooper introduces this short piece of clay animation from 1970 showing how an old lady learns to use the pedestrian crossing. She is in the habit of crossing the road wherever she fancies, causing traffic disruption. One day a young man in a sports car bumps into her. The narration is told in verse and Elsie lands 'like a sack, her language blue, her bottom black'. Henry Cooper signs off at the end with 'Stop, look for traffic, listen for traffic, and keep your guard up. And box clever, right?'

This film is made available on the LSA YouTube channel courtesy of the London Borough of Camden. The film is housed at Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre.

  • Great little film but this isn't clay animation! The animator has clearly used models in the way that Camberwick Green and Trumpton were animated.

  • Love this old clay animations

  • This is pretty cool. A little freaky with the animation, but still cool.
