Nativity images by artist William Kurelek set in Canadian settings are accompanied by Chris De Burgh's (mostly) instrumental piece "When Winter Comes".
He was very mild mannered, kind and generous with his art, especially with my parents. He even painted a scene of our family (9 kids) swimming in our pond as a thank you for allowing him to spend 3 weeks on our farm painting. His art is deeply personal and profound. I can attest to this after living with it for a lifetime in my parents home. You can catch one of Kurelek's finest paintings (Mama) next Fall through Mayberry Fine Arts. We returned Mama to Canada for all to share...
(See previous post) As a thank you for painting at our farm, he painted a family scene of us swimming in our pond...all 9 of us placed in the scene! He was able to express so much through his art...truly remarkable and kind!! I distinctly remember his mild mannered way and his generosity with his art, especially with my parents...
He may have been ill, but talent not wasted!! He was quite prolific and profound in his short life (died from cancer - likely to working in an unventilated basement with toxic paints). I remember visiting his studio as a child and have a vivid image of the cramped quarters that he worked in. He was a personal family friend as my parents purchased several paintings including "Mama" from his first show, and maintained a lifelong friendship. He even came to our farm in Michigan to paint.
National Film Network distributes a 1971 documentary on the life of the artist called "The Maze: the story of William Kurelek", in case anyone is interested in learning more about him and his body of work. He was so tortured, sensitive to the harsh, bare existence of the world around him and a really brilliant artist.
This is truly one of my favorite Christmas books of all time. Thanks so much for combining it with Chris DeBurgh's haunting music.

I wanna play this on the piano, but I don't know how. Does somebody know where to find a tutorial or the sheets? Thanks! It's so beautiful!

de la sérénité.. Et des images qui ne sont pas celles qu'on voit d'ordinaire. L'illustration est une belle réussite.
