I'm a new gardener and I love your videos! I've learned so much from watching you. Keep taping I've got a lot to learn yet! :) have you ever grown leeks or shallots? I'm having problems with those. Thank you!

Shallots can be eaten like green onions, or grown for their bulbs as they keep better than onions. They have the same needs as leeks. Be sure to keep the weeds down on both as they don’t like competition. When the tops dry down, dig them in the morning, let them dry in the sun for the day. Collect and dry for 2 to 3 weeks on screens. Knock off soil, braid, and hang them in a dry place. Don’t peel or wash until ready to use. Save some good ones to plant next year.

Thanks for your kind comments. Leeks are like giant mild onions. Start very early in Spring, in well-dug soil, in full sun. They need 1” of water a week. Side dress with compost at six weeks. When full grown, mound dirt about 2” to blanch stem. In Fall, mulch in with leaves and continue digging them. One of mine came up this Spring by itself.
