Pope Francis was a young peronist being Eva alive.In the violent 1970s he was already a jesuit priest and joined and armed far-right peronist group called Guardia de Hierro(who greeted and protected Peron in his return from exile in Francos Spain)whose aim was to defeat the other peronist much larger guerilla Montoneros(slightly left-prone).Peron died in ´74,his widow Isabel took office to be overthrown by military Junta 2 years later,starting a Dirty War in which popes role is controversial.

Complicated. Argentina has had horrendous politicians past and present. The things that the government thinks up there are amazing. The Perons turned a country that had wealth on par with Australia and the US into the 3rd world...freezing so much of its development and infrastructure in time. The corrupt government puts evita on a 100 peso note and prints pesos causing horrendous inflation...and closing exchange houses. THEFT in the name of evita.

I wonder what the new pope thinks about Eva Peron. Being born in 1936, before WWII, he was alive during the reign of her husband Juan. The pope was only 15 when Evita passed away from cancer in Buenos Aires in July 1952. Did he support the Peronists? What is his attitude to what many Argentines regard as "Santa Evita"? I don't mean to inject politics, but am only being curious, as Pope Francis I (r. 2013-) was alive in the time and place that Evita dominated Argentine political scene.
