Sam @ infusionstudios3d.com takes a look at Next Limit's latest addition to Maxwell Render, "Fire". Fire is an interactive preview render engine that integrates into your host 3D application or runs as part of Maxwell Studio. In this case we are looking at Fire within 3D studio Max. Part I takes a look at performance in a medium sized exterior architectural visualization as well as DOF and camera exposure.

  • Regarding computer setup Maxwell Render and Fire are CPU intensive rather than GPU. So I would recommend a machine with as many cores as you can afford. I run an overclocked Intel Core i7 @ 3.5 Ghz or so. 12 Gigs of RAM. Nvidia 295 GTX dual core GPU. You could opt for Dual Xeons to get 16 cores but they are pricey. I leverage a small render farm of core i7s if it's a big render or animation.

  • Yes, this works with 3D CAD files. There is a list of 3D programs Maxwell Render works with on their website.

Note: not all of them support "Fire" which is the real-time component of Maxwell Render.

So though it works with 3D CAD(Mesh) drawings, it's really more a matter of what 3D app your working in.

  • BTW, What type of setup are you working with? I'm looking to get a new computer primarily for 3D architectural modeling and Photoshop. You sound pretty knowledgeable. Can you recommend a set up?

  • Does this program work with 3D CAD drawings?
