Don't throw away stale bread. Make croutons! Our family loves them. I hope you'll try this. The recipe can be tweaked and tinkered with to suit your family's tastes.

20 slices of bread, cut into 1/2" cubes
1/2 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 teaspoon red pepper
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Stir spices into butter/oil mixture. Drizzle over bread cubes, stopping to stir frequently. Spread onto 2 foil lined baking sheets. Bake at 275 degrees, stirring every 15-20 minutes for at least one hour. To test if done, take a few croutons out, let cool, and determine if crunch all the way through...if so, their done.

Let cool completely. Store in airtight container until ready to use.

Enjoy!

  • I made some, and yum yum. They lasted 1 meal and a snack a few hours later. How do you keep them longer when they are so yummy?

  • @DorisAnneS We don't! The same thing happens in our house! lol

  • I have a question. Why do we have to use stale bread? Can't we use a regular fresh loaf of bread to make these? Sometimes a loaf of bread is on sale for a buck. Do I have to let the bread sit for a few days to make it stale? Or can one use a fresh loaf of bread?

  • @MelodyLubart123 You can certainly use fresh bread, it's just takes a little more time to slice. Stale bread cuts a little easier because it's not so delicately fresh. Thanks for asking such a good question.

  • Ok I made these and I have to say its worse than having potato chips in the house. We can't stay out of them so so good! Thank you.

  • @255sage LOL....You can't say I didn't warn you! Glad your family likes them.
