Personally I think the key to sci-fi is to forgo the CGI where you can and have modelling or some other technique. Star Wars first trilogy was so successful using modelling and is still loved for it.

Keep in mind the total budget for this with VFX was about 50,000 all in.

We came very close to the ABC network here in Australia greenlighting the show into a TV series last month but missed out by one other submission which was also scifi I believe, however had a much darker tone, which was apparently what they were looking for... oh well, keep on shopping it !
