Ranches that are part of an ecosystem largely unaltered for 200 years are as rare as pure strains of cutthroat trout these days, but the Flying River Ranch just outside of Meeteetse, Wyoming, is exactly one such place. Spreading approximately 4,962 deeded acres of choice grasslands and riverine bottomlands among the foothills of the Absaroka Mountains, the Flying River Ranch stands apart as a property long managed in full harmony with its environment. Years of careful stewardship have paid off not only for its famed organic beef operation, but also for the health of two miles of the cutthroat-filled Greybull River and a diversity of wildlife that represents the best of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. For those seeking a "full package" of proven cattle ranching, excellent big game hunting, wildlife viewing and world-class trout fishing, the Flying River Ranch is unsurpassed.
Just upstream from the historic town of Meeteetse, Wyoming, the Flying River Ranch preserves an environment that benefits both cattle and wildlife. Big game hunting on the ranch is superb, especially for trophy whitetail deer and elk (350+ inch bulls have been taken), but mule deer, antelope, black bear and mountain lions are also present in good numbers. The ranch qualifies for coveted Wyoming landowner deer, elk and antelope tags. Those seeking evidence that the unspoiled west still exists will be glad to know that wolves and grizzly bears occasionally roam through the ranch as well. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is alive and very well at the Flying River Ranch.
The Greybull River, which flows through two miles of the ranch, also attests to the unspoiled West. The Greybull supports what many biologists consider the best remaining genetically pure populations of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, direct descendants from the fish that lived here when the land was still the domain of the Shoshone Indians. Benefitting from superb water quality and a healthy riparian environment, many cutthroats on the ranch routinely grow in excess of 20 inches. Unlike most western streams, the Greybull has never been stocked with rainbow or brown trout or other exotic species, and thus offers a native fishing experience almost vanished throughout the remainder of the West.
The organic cattle side of the Flying River Ranch is one of its greatest assets. In addition to its 4962 deeded acres, the Flying River Ranch includes a 2940 BLM and State grazing lease. A 28,000-acre Forest Service grazing permit can be purchased separately, along with 400 mother cows and 375 USDA certified organic yearling cattle, one of the highest USDA organic designations awarded. The Forest Service grazing permit is located in the adjoining Wood River valley, which many consider one of the loveliest mountain valleys in the West.
Improvements on the ranch include a fine 2 bedroom, 2 bath owner's home and a 3 bedroom, 2 bath manager's home, a large quonset hut, barn, corrals and loafing shed. Flying River Ranch owns substantial water rights capable of irrigating more than 600 acres, in addition to a 1120 gallon-per-minute irrigation well and a 60 gallon-per-minute artesian well. The snow-capped Absaroka Mountains serve as a scenic backdrop throughout the property. Flying River Ranch is easily accessible year-round by paved road from Meeteetse (complete with wooden boardwalks), just a couple of miles downriver. The resort town of Cody (eastern gateway to Yellowstone National Park) is only 30 minutes away, and offers an excellent public airport.
"Meeteetse" is a Shoshone word meaning "meeting place." Harrigan Land Company believes that Flying River Ranch is where ranching and environmental stewardship meet. The results are impressive, and we'd be happy to show this unique property to those in search of their corner of the unspoiled West.
