A press conference and singning cermeony was held today in Vancouver December 1st 2011 on the first anniversary of 61 First Nations Chiefs signing of the Save the Fraser Declaration. (http://SaveTheFraser.ca)
Today First Nations banned oil tankers off the BC coast using their traditional laws.
The declaration asserts indigenous sovereignty and calls for no oil pipelines or oil tankers for export in thief traditional territories. This declaration is signed by even more chiefs today on the eve of consultations beginning on the Enbridge pipeline project. Opposition to pipelines has also spread to encompass opposition to Kinder Morgan's proposed pipeline and tanker expansion in Metro Vancouver.
Now even more pressure and focus is on BC after the defeat of the Keystone XL pipeline in the USA.
