THE BYSTANDER IN CALGARY
Country: USA
Year: 2008
Duration: 2'55''
Based on the theme of citystates, it is the bystander that asks the questions today: unengaged by audiences already decided, an industry that collides with the thin world and a media that explodes city life into lost insights, the bystander is the only sane individual we can turn to. The bystander challenges any citation that attempts to bring them into a greater socio-cultural mix or sense of movement; still, unmoving, and unmoved, the image of the bystander exists in the nonsense of movement, a transition that can never be re-experienced. The bystander's cultural make up becomes the city's cultural wake up uttered discreetly; always about to make that leap from the window to become duchamps to themselves.
heron-mazy (US/UK) is the director of a series of architecture scripts and films exploring altered architecture and the moving image called "pulping the city". Different films and slashed versions of each film including Involuntary Architecture have been exhibited at various venues: Cranbrook Museum of Art; Detroit Film Center; Dallas Video Festival 21 & 22 ; Creative Research Laboratory, Austin, Texas; BEYOND MEDIA 05; & Project 59 Video Festival, Tribeca NYC. They also recently were awarded First Prize in the White House Redux International Design Competition.
