Here's a clip from Udo Pipper playing an original '59 Gibson Les Paul. It's taken from the Gitarre & Bass Magazine 03/2008 where they compare a Gibson Les Paul Reissue vs. an original '59 using the same set up (Cream JTM45 clone with chinese KT66, 4x12 cab with Celestion G12M Greenback Reissue from the 90's). Check out the other clip with the Gibson Les Paul R9: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GA9dZtlYaLI&feature=channel_page
You guys really sucked me into this one. Great conversion! My experience shapes me views and opinions on tone. I have absolutely noticed all my guitars change with time. I hear the difference not only in age but the kind of wood each is made of. My mahogany bodies all have a chalky, gutty sound both plugged in and not plugged in. My ash body guitars sound tight and gritty. Alder seems a bit warmer, more "color". Age seems to get drier with more sustain. I hear nuances between every one.

@Guruguitartech No, I'm just a real player. Everyone else can buy into the "mojo" of slow growth wood, hide glue and what not. Just give me a run of the mill USA Les Paul and I'll make the people stand on their chairs. I don't care if it's made of plywood.

@murfdog19 of course you can but thats not what we are talking about...my friend ...listen...I have swapped vintage pickups and electronics in newer instruments..and it soundds nothing like the older better wood select instrument

@STORYTASTIC Give me a Les Paul made out of oak, or a Strat made out of mahogany, and I'll make them sound like a Les Paul and Strat.....no matter what wood is used to build them.

@murfdog19 well my friend I appreciate your passion but you are sooo wrong wood is everything in electric instruments..I build so I know I am a 40 year player builder and pro ...wood is extremely important...sorry you are very much mistaken
all the best!!

@STORYTASTIC Wood is king on noob guitar forums. They also believe that '59 Les Pauls contain magical fairy dust!! The wood is very important in acoustic guitars, not for electric. I played a Strat made out of metal that still sounded like a Strat. If you are an actual player, than you know that the tone of an electric guitar comes from the electronics, guitar shape and scale length. Real builders don't buy into all of the other hype.

@murfdog19 the stupidest statement I have read about guitars!! as a guitar builder myself I can tell u 100 percent the wood has EVERYTHING to do with how a guitar sounds!!! pickups electronics etc. are important but wood is KING!!

@sheptone I'm not a believer in the hideglue/brazilian/old growth argument. Give your VOS 40 years to age, and I bet it will sound pretty close to the real thing. I believe the chalky sound of a vintage guitar comes from the dry wood. But, there are many who believe the wood of a guitar has absolutely no effect on tone at all.
