This reply is really late, but I thought I'd give it anyway. I think the idea IS really cool, however I'd have to agree with your mother. It is kind of disrespectful to tear up a bible, even if it is old and falling apart.

"A bible that's falling apart, usually belongs to someone who isn't." So, I think the old bible serves as a tribute to how it's been used for son long.

As an alternative, you could print out the desired verses on paper, and stain them with coffee, for an aged look.
