Start fire with Swedish FireSteel

Dry leaves for tinder. Swedish Fire Steel Scout Fire starter. Supposed to last 12000 strikes. The dry tinder did ignite fairly quickly. I used dry bamboo leaves and grass as tinder, and cedar sticks as kindle.

you would be able to start your fire much more easily if you used a better source of tinder such as old dry straw or hay, using anything living (green leaves etc) makes it much more difficult to start and tend to smoke alot generally not a great fuel source unless you are trying to draw attention with a signal fire

@finch11 yeah I agree. This is the material I had in the backyard. I guess I was simulating a emergency survival situation:). Once the spark ignited, it wasn't too bad.

What I need to do is research how to find dry tinder in the woods

It looked like pain to use with the short lanyard, but moving the steel and not thre rod throws the sparks into the tinder bundle. But it still worked!

Ebay has these under the search term, "Ferrocerium", "Ferro" , or "Firesteel".

@jadejordan1 I don't know any way of making them. They sell them in most stores. This one is the Swedish Fire Steel "Scout" model. There are other brands too.
