  • @vsibirsky very true, we are just taliking about the big band arangments that stands in a lower level compare to the original.

  • Needs to "arranging" by anyone.. Listen to Laura Nyro... the original.

  • @FrenchFlower1 So if we se it like that, than Stan Kenton and Don Ellis where on the same level as big band leaders when maynard where not (as a big band leader) but than as a solist Maynard outclasses both Don Ellis and Stan Kenton.

Plus both you and i knows that Maynard will never go to the history as a big band leader, but Don Ellis will.

  • @FrenchFlower1 Maynard are known as a solist when Don Ellis are known as an composer and leader of probebly the most experimental orchestra ever.

So what im saying is, dont give Maynard the honor for the arangements he did not wright. In other hand, Don Ellis did wright most of his songs besides of them he payed Hank Levy to wright, plus that Hank Levy wrote a bunch of arangments to Stan Kentons band wich was the band where Maynard once playde in............

  • Simply put, Don Ellis' arrangement of this song is more exciting than Maynard's (and I love Maynard). And way WAY more exciting than 3 Dog Night's.

  • Both versions are good. This IS music.

  • HEY WE'RE forgetting ONE THING...Don Ellis was one of Maynard's "sideman". BOTH MASTERS are gone......BLOWIN THEIR CHOPS-OFF IN HEAVEN. **We should be so lucky!!!!

  • Im not blameing maynard becaus he was not the one who wrote his ar, but who cares realy. Thay where both great in there own ways.

  • This thing about about witch is best Maynards or Dons is probebly a troll frome the beginning. But im going to answer what i think anyway^^

First; Im more the fan of powerful sounds like Don Ellis and especialy this song akording to me works best with a powerful sound.

Second; Myanards ar have acording to me the corny stemple with the trombone sound that have 100% lack of mystic.

Third; Maynard doesent have the bad ass Bond/Chaft acide jazz feeling that Don have.

  • @tsreyb I agree completely! Don's sound here reminds one of the horn solo in Laura Nyro's 'Save The Country' long version from 'New York Tendaberry', do you agree? Laura was a major jazz/blues fan and performer.
