First silo-based ICBM? Careful there! The Atlas F was also silo-based. Early models of the Atlas preceded the Titan I. I'm not sure whether the Atlas F beat the Titan I to alert status, but there's a good chance it did. The Titan I was the first U.S. ICBM to be designed SOLELY for silo basing.
I went to tech school there in 1990, for suppy, and it was a nice base, been back in the last 2 years, its sort of reclaimed, but part of it went to seed, the dorms we lived in are in ruin, sad to see that
I was at Lowry July 76 to Feb 77, 316x1L missile systems, same squadron with the 46's right next door to the loader school. Orientation/inbound folks stayed in the nasty WWII wooden barracks till their tech training squadrons got rooms for them in the brick barracks. I liked Denver, Aurora and Lowry. Shame to see it's gone now. Later after 2 yrs in Iceland they were shutting down the 316x1L field into ammo so I retrained into cruise missiles at Chanute AFB IL in 82, back as instructor in 85.

I'd love to buy a missile silo to build into a house. Ive seen pictures of silo/house conversions on the net. It looks really neat.
