@SkateNater yes i know she wasnt the world champion in 83 but out of all of the condenders she was the one to beat at that time its just sweeter that she really did deserve to win she just totally kicked ass.

@MNGYM26 Agreed Szabo would have medalled but the combination of Mostepanova and Yurchenko, plus the East Germans on bars, she would have had to be in the form of her life to win gold.

@LETMEINGUYS How was Ekaterina Szabo the one to beat? Natalia Yurchenko was the reigning world all-around champion. Mary Lou wasn't even at Worlds in 1983. She only competed and won domestic titles and the Olympics were in L.A.

@ralucagymnast OH I definitely agree here. All the results there, except maybe bars, would have been completely different had the Soviets been there. I am American and I'm very proud of what our gymnasts have accomplished over the years but MLR was handed a gift and if there was no boycott she would have been nowhere near the podium in the AA.

@ralucagymnast they all made mistakes marylou was just a tiny bit better yeah she did have the home advantage but that shouldnt matter the romanians dominated for decades and besides thats just the way the game is played. But i think youre right Mary lous vaults were just awesome. she scored four perfect tens in the all around ( both vaults were tens ). lets talk more youre the only one i have yet to find in youtube that seems to be able to have a mature conversation with me.

@LETMEINGUYS Well, Szabo did make mistakes. Thats the only reason Marylou won, plus she was playing to a home crowd. To be fair, Marylou's two Tsuk vaults were absolutely fantastic though; one of my favourite moments in gymnastics and in sport actually:)

@ralucagymnast well lets think about this ecatarina szabo was the one going into the games as the one to beat she was better than all of the russuans at that time and marylou beat her fair and square

That can't be true, because of the 3 per country rule :)
She could have been 4th because of soviets, though.
Yes, she was one of my favourites too. And there is no doubt whatsoever that she would have been the Olympic Champion in 1984 had the USSR not boycotted the LA Games. Mary Lou Retton would have been lucky to be in the top 10 with the field the Soviets had.

Delightful! Thank you for sharing this! Olga Mostepanova is one of my alltime favorite gymnasts. She was the best in the world in 1984 too. :)
