This exchange from 1942's "To Be or Not to Be" could be called an example of that wonderfully indefinable "Lubitsch touch". Pilot Lieutenant Sobinski (Robert Stack) pays a backstage visit to Warsaw's most famous stage actress, Maria Tura (Carole Lombard). She's married, but that doesn't seem to be stopping her from having a slightly naughty chat with this handsome young "fan."

I adore this scene. Nobody could mess with the censors quite as skillfully as Lubitsch, and Lombard's delivery is divine.

  • This is one of those rare movies which actually ages well with each viewing. The double entendres flow easily with the Lubitsch touch.

  • carole lombard was really good in inglorious basterds

  • Robert Stack before he asumed the voice of God. Nice to see he was still a stoned beast even without his defining trait. He truly was a monument to all that is good and decent.

  • One of my favorites!

  • Love it.
