Sydämeni laulu

Music / Melodie: Jean Sibelius
Lyrics / Worte: Aleksis Kivi
Performed by Ylioppilaskunnan laulajat

"Tuonen lehto, öinen lehto,
siell' on hieno hietakehto,
sinnepä lapseni saatan.

Siell' on lapsen lysti olla,
Tuonen herran vainiolla
kaitsea Tuonelan karjaa.

Siell' on lapsen lysti olla,
illan tullen tuuditella
helmassa Tuonelan immen.

Onpa kullan lysti olla,
kultakehdoss' kellahdella,
kuullella kehrääjälintuu.

Tuonen viita, rauhan viita!
kaukana on vaino, riita,
kaukana kavala maailma."

The Song of My Heart (Grove of Tuoni)

English translation by Alex Matson

"Grove of Tuoni, grove of night!
There thy bed of sand is light.
Thither my baby I lead.

Mirth and joy each long hour yields
In the Prince of Tuoni's fields
Tending the Tuonela cattle.

Mirth and joy my babe will know,
Lulled to sleep at evening glow
By the pale Tuonela maiden.

Surely joy hours will hold,
Lying in thy cot of gold,
Hearing the nightjar singing.

Grove of Tuoni, grove of peace!
There all strife and passion cease.
Distant the treacherous world."

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs in the whole world.

  • Very lovely! I first heard the Cantus recording of this, and I did a transcription for my brothers and I to song; this recording, however, has a heightened sense of drama that I find very compelling.

  • This song brings me to tears. The words were inscribed on my brothers death notice at the age of just under four. My mother walked to his grave every day for two months. The song was performed throughout my life, and I sang it with the Toronto Finnish Male Choir. Kiitos.

  • perfect melody!.

  • Finoman száll egy dallam.....,

    Érzem szivemben a zenét.

    Minden tiszta, minden szűzi,

    A lelkem áhitattal van teli..........IR

  • Tätä laulua en voi itkemättä kuunnella. Olen joutunut viemää oman vuoden ikäisen poikani juuri tuon Tuonelan immen helmaan.

  • Loved Jean for years and years and these last 24 hrs have brought some extra special echoes of his genius, from all angles..:-)))

  • @puistis - I think you're replying to someone else's comment, not mine. I didn't say anything about the meaning of the words, but simply about the beauty and drama of this piece.

  • Thing is, tuoni is not usual christian heaven in our country.

So, if you still insist that it is so, after checking what it means here, i don't oppose your opinion.

But i do think you have mistake in your knowledge here.

  • .... "tuonen herran vainiolla" ... also, without a productive marriage, like as an undeclared monk, as he also might have been on the time, our love Aleksis Kivi ... Sibelius met this mystics fine in his music.

  • This is the most most beuatiful song ( for singersrs) not only one the most. Espesiaaaly if you listen to YL singers to perform if.

  • @terryspade the most...
