@Komischer And, uh, I don't think this scene really glances upon Chinese culture at that time. Her makeup is exaggerated to the point of ridiculousness, and the dress is not exactly accurate. Besides, Mulan didn't just go poof in the night--she had dressed up as a young man and had beaten her father in a duel, just to prove herself. Her father knew she had joined the army. So he wouldn't actually have killed her...

@Komischer Of course, they took liberties with this movie. In the original legend even, Mulan was never discovered to be a woman (in most variations). The Emperor had offered her a permanent position in the army, but because she wanted to stay by her parents' sides and because she wasn't stupid enough to push her luck, Mulan refused the offer, as well as the rewards. And the fight in the palace was of course bullshit, but hey, it makes for a good movie.

@Komischer It is very likely that this movie was based on a true story. They haven't found enough facts to prove it yet. For all we know they were being generous.

so, I love this movie. Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies (wish they still made them like this) BUT, this scene is probably the one of the only ones that even glances upon Chinese culture of that time. When she was found out to be a woman in the army, they would have killed her on the spot, life debt or not...and if by some chance they did let her go like they did in the movie, her father would have killed her when she got home...just sayin'.

That's what the girls were implying. Scarier than the undertaker, we are meeting out matchmaker. It has the same meaning

If you're being serious then I guess not. If the matchmaker matches you with some scary man who beats you up then I guess there isn't anything scarier than her. You'd better get the matchmaker to like you or she might purposely put you in a bad situation.
