I got a TI-83+ graphing calculator which took quite a bit of fiddling to power up and when it did the screen displayed mostly garbage graphics but seemed to work fine otherwise. I couldn't find any mention of this problem on the Internets so I set out to find the cure myself. I found out that the flat flex cable connecting the calculator motherboard to the display module developed high resistance which caused voltage and communication drops. It only had 17 lines in total so I ripped the crappy flex out and replaced it with soldered wires. Good as new!

Now I gotta find or make myself a serial cable so I can transfer applications and play Mario on this thing :-D

  • how did you get the display test eg all pixels on, all pixels off? Btw, the self-test worked my screen works like new!

  • Nice repair. What would be the cause of an LCD showing part of a digit? Would it be an easy fix?

  • @sayefwasif Permanent missing lines on the screen (instead of random garbage like mine) could mean that the other flex cable is bad, the one from the LCD controller chip to the glass screen itself. Check the solder joints on that one or try pressing the flex in certain spots and see if the missing lines come back.

  • @sayefwasif Does the calculator seem to work fine aside from the screen issues?
