In the absence of a 24/7 water supply in cities, households resort to building sump tanks, pumps and overhead tanks to ensure water in the taps all through the day. If pressurized water from city lines was available 24/7 these costs could be saved. Contamination of water in the mainlines could also be avoided. Contra intuitively less water would be consumed by households. The sheer lack of accountability of our water supply institutions prevents the achievement of 24/7 water.

  • Assured availability of water would mean people would not store and throw 'old' water. All water would be 'new'. Backed by an appropriate tariff system with an increasing block penalising overuse of water it has been shown that 24/7 actually decreases consumption. It also saves on leaking water hence reducing net consumption too.
