Probably some type of no toxic chemical or natural smoke. The guy is not wearing protective gear, so it probably just irritates the rats to the point where they run out. You would run out too if they pumped your house full of burning wood smoke, to the point where you cant breathe.

My jack russell made her first kill a few weeks ago, and she has been happy ever since! It was just a rabbit though, hope she catches rats soon!
