Backward helmet cam footage of the Staple Bend Tunnel near Johnstown Pennsylvania. It is the oldest train tunnel in the United States. It was built as part of the Portage Railroad to shuttle canal boats in 1833.

  • Thanks for your comments. I am not sure of the length of the trails. The Path of the Flood Trail was not very long and I am guessing at 6 miles.

The local rail trail advocates created the bypass trail to avoid a mining area that will not give them access. Many people had to walk.

At 9:50, we were approaching Johnstown.

I highly recommend the both trails; I would only ride to the Staple Bend Tunnel and then turn around. The surface of both of the improved sections are crushed limestone.

  • A video timeline, for the next viewer:

    1:35 entered Staple Bend Tunnel,

3:15 emerging from Staple Bend Tunnel, bumpy descent,

    5:30 bicycle traffic jam,

6:30 moving again, rough section of trail (walking?),

    9:50 back on smooth trail,

11:05 on road, approaching Johnstown, I'm guessing.

So how is this trail? Can you describe it?
