yes thats necessary.dont hit on the middle of the racquet but on the upper surface of the racquet.i will tell you the reason that is if we hit the birdie{shuttle cock}from the mid point it will goes straight to the opponent.the thing is smash is that the birdie must go down below the waist of the opponent.So smashing on the upper surface will gives the birdie the momentum to go down.That's why he's saying that dont hit the shuttle on the middle of the racquet.
