  • oh noes!!!!!!! Historian Nerd net arguement...

    jus enjoy the song

  • @nertos466 oh yeah they sucked against mainland troops like the Anglo Saxons (where they ruled and put down rebellions of the the conquered land), the Gaels(where they assimilated into the society and took part in battle across the island), and in Kiev (where the held the throne)... Besides the countless times they were used as mercenaries in massive engagements and help turned the tide. Secondly it was their religion to die in battle and gain favor amongst the mighty Aesir

  • @Flyingtart Siphais too >w> Those guys are BAMFs

  • @Flyingtart In any case, Byzantine Cataphracts would smash them. I have a really hard time deciding whether I like the Byzantines or Turks more >.>

I believe that it is in the Jomsvikinga saga they tell about their reputation more. Read it, and I can assure you that you will see how badass they were. Especially the part about how Jomsvikings accept death like it's nothing. I also saw that in Medieval Total War: viking invasion the Jomsvikings are the best military unit in the game. And the Jomsviking commanders mentioned in the fictional/non fictional book "Röde orm" ("the long ships") are badass too.

It wasn't always like that. Once, China had the most advanced weaponry in the world (repeating crossbows, gunpowder, multistage rockets and more). But they didn't conquer all of Asia because they were too busy with their own civil wars all the time.

  • @Flyingtart I am not sure.

I have only read about the jomsvikings in "Heimskringla", and they did not impress me.

I only know they did a good job in England. I think I will read the "Jómsvíkinga saga" to get a better understanding about them.

  • @Zeilond12

No dude. They were famous and according to the saga they were reputated as the biggest badasses on the seas.

  • @Flyingtart The jomsvikings. . . Are you kidding me?

  • I've noticed that Eastern countries have always fought in numbers, while western with sheer force and innovation; I guess it matters on the resources available to a country... and the east tended to be poor and overpopulated so it all makes sense. Today you see the same thing; compare the equipment used by the USA and EU with that of China, India and the Islamic countries :)

Best viking units were probably the jomsviking or maybe the varangian guard. They would probably die though unless they managed to close up on the janissaries quickly.
