Under The Ground started in December 2003, when Salvatore Corso, a photographer who lives and works in NY, decided to photograph the live performances in the New York City subway.
After several months of work, during a trip to Italy, Salvatore met Maurizio Pini. Maurizio is a musician who lives and works in Cesate, a small town North of Milan. He was interested in the project and wanted to create a soundtrack of 'sound images' made from noises, voices and sounds from the subway, to accompany the photos.
Back in NY, Salvatore started the recordings and sent them via email to Maurizio in Italy. He processed the digital files, created the music and synchronized it to the photos.
The resulting work is a slideshow with a soundtrack.
The goal of this project is to make a book with a CD-ROM which enables to look at the photos while listening the music, either with the sequence on the book or the disc or randomly, just like when being in the subway.
Artists shown in the slide show:
Michael Shulman; Brandy Gump; Wayne Walcott; William Ruiz; Stacy Dillard Trio; Larry Wright; East River Ensemble; Carolina Slim; Lee Floyd; Shakerleg; Claudio Rochat Felix; Jaime Ospina; United Family of Strings; The New Generation Gospel Singers; Wendy Sayvetz; Alice Tan Ridley; Julio Diaz; Columbus; Atiba N'Kwabena; Shogo Kubo; Michael James; Fernando Riano; James Grasek; Marinica Ciotoi; Takagi Yasuyuki; Urielbridge.

I love it, Salvatore! I love the sounds, the way it builds slowly, climaxes and slowly fades. I love the images; my only suggestion would be to mix up the types of photos, ie, separate the b/w's from each other, the wide angles, etc. to make it more spontaneous and surprising. Thanks for sharing this with me!
