We set out to explore the mysterious central viaduct in the city center that has once again risen up from the ashes now that Monkbridge has been knocked down. Central viaduct has hid behind Monkbridge works for a 100yrs. Make the most of this oppurtunity to view it as new developements in the area will once again hide this magnificent structure forever. Built in 1844 by the G.N.R & closed on the 1st of May 1967 when all trains were diverted in to the 'new' City station. The viaduct is totally severed at both ends. The surviving structure has 15 arches with 2 gracefull overbridges adorned by ornate ballustrades that cross the river Aire & Leeds-Liverpool canal. The viaducts total length is 332yds long.

  • Thanks Kangaryu. Glad you enjoyed seeing some of this viaduct normally out of sight. Cheers!

  • Hi Leigh. We were in a rush only to add to the suspense of the video of course.. Wee had a script for this one! We should have the new one ready for this Monday. If you like the Italian job & Porridge you'll like this one

    :-)

  • Thanks Digital. Excellent compliment. I know about the spelling...It's me rushing to get the thing ready. I'll slow down for the next one! Promise!!

  • My father, and my ex-wife's father both worked at Monkbridge. I've been there a few times, and pass the site occasionally, but have never seen any of this.

I think such videos are essential to keep the history of the City of Leeds.

    Keep it up.

  • I drive trains out of Leeds and I have often wished I could see what it is like up on that old bridge.

    Thanks guys.

  • Only just got a U Tube account, so these are new to me - but all as brilliant as your Flickr stills, you've picked the absolute best incidental music for them all! Particularly liked the Central Viaduct video, as it's always been one of my favourite structures in Leeds. Did you also get any pictures of the Engine Lift (I think that's what it was...) which carried locomotives up and down from the higher to lower levels? Thanks, as ever, Phill! Regards, Minxy Pie.

  • I grew up in Holbeck in the late 1950s and remember the Central Station & the approach viaduct very well. Never dreamed that I'd see the view from the top, though! My mother worked at Monkbridge engineering for several years.

Thanks for helping to preserve some of the Leeds heritage for our enjoyment. Well done to you all.

  • Great film Phill,

and a treat to hear Dave Allen At Large around 8:28 too!

The best '70s TV theme after Robin's Nest!

  • Very good, interesting to see up on the viaduct and around.

  • ...amazing stuff...but why are you all in such a hurry..? Holbeck forever...!

  • Constructive criticism: Some of the text came and went too quickly :P

fairly interesting video although i didnt know what i was looking at :D
