When you play guitar/bass, you wear it so you don't get wrist burn. After a while, it becomes a habit to wear it, really.

He wears the wrist band for when he performs. When you play bass, guitar, etc. the body of the instrument can rub against your wrists/lower arm. And that hurts really bad when you are playing almost every night for years. So I'm assuming he wears the wristband to protect his arm (notice he wears it on the arm that touches the body of his bass) and I'm also assuming that it is NOT because he cuts himself.
