A Bristol RE, built with a Leyland O.500 series engine as a test-bed for the forthcoming Leyland National, is captured here working a 14 from the Lawrence Hill area of Bristol to the Fishponds area. She had a B44D body.

  • I have long known of this testing but never heard the sound of this combination before. Interesting indeed. Curiously the full "clatter" of the O.510 seems overridden by the "ghost" of an RE's soul - that exhaust and the epicyclic whine are pure RE. Well done for giving us this for posterity.

    Tony,

    Derby.

  • @v6200man

Thanks Tony, more to follow :)...

  • Thanks for your comments - I have loads more to upload, including more of this particular RE.

Proceeds from CDs will help a planned restoration project...

  • I've never heard this before, and it really does sound bizzare! It does remind me of a 510 engine in a VR...

Put some more up here Bob. By the way, I'm looking into the possibility of getting 1260...

  • Flipping awsome recordings we1330, do you have any plans to release these recordings onto a cd? I would happly buy a copy, many thanks for uploading this clip.

  • thanks for this Robert, it's certainly an odd combination of familiar sounds.

  • This would have been a familiar sound in Chrustchurch, New Zealand as all of their RELLs had this combination. It does sound a lot like my VR, former Bristol Omnibus 5031. Great stuff Bob - thanks for posting it.

  • Sounds absolutely wonderful and better than the usual Gardner boring rubbish! I have got a Leyland engined VR and it emits similar sound effects

  • Interesting! Must be like the Bristol VR with a Leyland engine to drive. Sounds just like a National.
